School/College Satellite Clubs

Satellite Clubs -  What is Sport England trying to achieve?

By 2017 every secondary school in England will be offered a satellite community sports club on its site.

These clubs will help grow the number of 11 – 25 years taking part in sport for at least 30 minutes every week, as well as reducing the number of young people dropping out of sport.

What is a satellite club?

Satellite clubs are extensions of Community sports club that are established in a new venue.

It’s a common concept. Think about local versions of supermarkets. Brands that customers know and trust combined with the convenience of being around the corner.

The satellite club will be run by ourselves and we will bring our expertise and enthusiasm to Trinity Academy

Why do we need satellite clubs?

We know that the step form school sport to community sport is often great for young people. This is why so many drop out of out of sport.

The satellite club will provide a stepping stone to our community hub and regular participation and exercise by providing a relevant, appealing and convenient sporting opportunity.

Advantages for students

  • Sport on their terms – the right sporting experience delivered at the right venue at the right time

  • Take part in sport with friends in a familiar, more informal environment

  • Discover and improve in a new sport

  • Take on coaching and leadership roles

How will the satellite club model work?

  • Commitment - Star Boxing Club will set up an outpost within your site

  • Promotion - Star Boxing Club and you promotes the satellite to students

  • Delivery - Star boxing club will provide coaches, volunteers and any equipment necessary. Training will be delivered once a week – be that as part of the curriculum or after school club. You will provide a suitable venue

  • Transition - Students will be encouraged to keep taking part in the satellite club and are helped to make the in to our hub club and regular participation in sport.

  • Sustainability - Star Boxing Club will invest in new coaches, develop young leaders with the satellite club and will explore ways of partnership funding to sustain the satellite club.

Why boxing?

The rebirth of Amateur Boxing in Halifax is sizable hence interest is very high, and boxing has a kind of "tough guy" image that is always enticing to young adults, though this is quickly dispelled once in the club. To begin with, the combination of athleticism, physical and mental conditioning, sportsmanship, and self-worth that you will develop from boxing are unequalled in any other sportBoxing will teach you to rely on yourself, to value the input of others, and most importantly to respect both your skills and those of others. You develop a level of self-confidence that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.Once the athlete is involved, the effect of a structured, organised program is almost immediate. All of a sudden, the youngster has a positive release of energy and frustration. The knowledge that the gym is a "safe haven" from the street can also serve as a very comforting thing.Boxing has numerous health benefits such as weight loss, better dexterity, cardiovascular exercise that works the heart, lungs and the main muscle groups. It improves speed agility, co-ordination and muscle strengthThe impact of a properly run boxing program is not limited to any one group. We have a tendency to focus on the "at risk" kids because we want to show how boxing can have a positive effect on a problem area. That's not to overlook the fact that all kids need positive influence in their lives. The advantages of being involved in a properly run boxing program apply to all kids and adults, no matter what their background.Interestingly, and again as importantly, member’s academic awareness of the body, functions and dietary needs are also significantly increased as involvement in the sport progresses.Experience also tells us that when either and individual adult or child joins the club they are often joined by either the parent or child thus becoming a joint activity, 30% of the current membership is father and son participation.
